For the Love of My Mom

When it comes to parents, I have been very fortunate indeed. Not only do I have a kind and loving father, but I have also been blessed with a wonderful, caring mother as well.

Growing up, both my parents worked full-time jobs. My father worked all three shifts, depending upon his job assignments, and my mother worked first shift at Boscov's Department Store where she eventually retired from after 30 years.

Because my father had to work alternate shifts, she had the very difficult responsibilty of raising my brother and myself by herself much of the time. Looking back, this was not an easy task by any means. Not only did she work full-time to help ends meet, but she also ran both my brother and I back and forth to trumpet lessons, twirling lessons, Girl Scout meetings and band practices, etc. She always made sure that we had terrific birthdays and she is the one who stayed up until two o'clock in the morning wrapping presents so that we could have memorable Christmases and holiday family dinners every year.

Since her retirement, she has been very actively involved with the AKC and training her dogs, something she does well and enjoys so much. She has trained four family dogs and acquired dozens of ribbons over the years for their Obedience Rallies. She also had a few Certified Therapy dogs as well.

Then, in the summer of 2000, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have a partial mastectomy. As scarey as this was, she was the bravest woman I have ever known and, with the love and support of our family as a whole, we found the strength to see her through. And, by the grace of the Goddess, she has been cancer-free for 11 years now!

My dad Bill, Aunt Janel and my mom, Elrita - 2011

She saw me through the "terrible teen" years, bad relationships, financial troubles and now Peri-menapause and through it all she has always done her best to be loving and supportive. The older I get, the more I realize how wonderful she really is and I wouldn't trade her for anything in the world!

Me and my shadow ...

It seems ever since we brought Midnight (a.k.a. "Scooter" as we have nicknamed him) home from the vet he has been especially "clingy" so to speak. With regards to mommy, he has been following me EVERYWHERE! Anywhere I go in the house, he is right behind me and underfoot. If I walk into the living room he is there, if I go into the kitchen he is there, the bedrooms and even the bathroom! When I take a shower he is sitting on the rug outside the tub. Last night, I did a load of laundry and (you guessed it) he was waiting at the top of the steps for me!

Now, he has always been close to me and I am by far the one he trusts the most and has chosen to bond with. I don't really mind so much as I can honestly say that I love this cat more than anything and he truly means the world to me.

Midnight sitting at my feet while on the computer

I am used to him being my "shadow" and he is definately the most loving, loyal kitty I have ever had; however, it is getting to the point that he is starting to make me feel somewhat guilty even getting the vacuum cleaner out to do my weekly cleaning - LOL!

My Herb Cabinet

Lately, I have been doing a little organizing around the house. One of the projects I have wanted to get to for quite a while now is my herb cabinet.

I have been gathering herbs for my herbal cabinet for years ~ some of them had I bought from a cool place we used to have in our area called, "Peter's Naturals" and some I brought back from Laurie Cabot's store, "The Cat, The Crow and The Crown" when we visited Salem, MA a few years ago.

I even found some that were still in their bags from when I bought them. I really love using the little Mason jars to store them in and I finally got around to labeling them!

You see, I have what you might call a "brown thumb" when it comes to growing plants and such, so it is much easier for me to just purchase my herbs wherever I can rather than try to grow my own.

Anyway, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday weekend - enjoy!!

Look Ma, no more cavities!

Alas, we got the call from our vet this morning that Midnight was doing fine and ready to come home. Aside from having three less teeth to eat with and having to eat nothing but soft food for a couple of weeks, he is very happy to be back at home with us!

As you can see, he also has a bandage on his front leg from the needles and a pain patch on his backside. Right now he is resting in the comfort of his own space. We will have to take him back to have his mouth checked out in two weeks and get his patch taken off. Hopefully, that visit will be covered by the $784.00 total of our final bill! Needless to say, when he goes back to this vet, it will be for the last time as we will be taking our kitties to my mother's vet who is also very good and easier on our wallets! They also gave us a disk of his x-rays so we can give that to our new vet.

All things considered, I thank the Goddess that he is doing okay and I am so glad our little boy is home now where he belongs!

A Trip to the Vet

Last time we had Mr. Midnight (a.k.a "Scooter") to our vet was a couple of weeks ago and we were told during his check-up that he has atleast two very badly rotting teeth. No doubt from his days outdoors rummaging through trash cans and such before we found him, gave him a home, and fell in love with the little guy.

Like it or not, we must take him back to the vet tomorrow night to have his teeth pulled in surgery on Wednesday. This is a very expensive procedure as it will cost us over $600.00 to have done, but if we don't, we run a huge risk of him contaminating his system from the poisonous toxins from his bad teeth. Cats lack certain liver enzymes which makes them unable to decontaminate certain chemicals - damaging their liver or worse. It is because of this that poisoned cats are less likely to recover than dogs. Sometimes, I think it must be the price they pay for the rest of their perfectly acute senses.

I will miss him purring me to sleep for a night or two, depending upon whether the vet feels we can take him home Wednesday and I know that he will be very upset with us for taking him, but I think we are doing the right thing for him in the end. Here's hoping everything goes smooth!

Lovin' it!

Tonight, I had the opportunity to use my new reiki bed for the first time since I bought it. I've just got two words to say, "Lovin' it!"

It is portable so I can take in anywhere and it is designed to provide a lot of comfort for the reiki client. Not only is comfort extremely important for anyone receiving the reiki treatments, but it was so great to be able to stand while giving reiki instead of kneeling on the floor with an inflatable bed!

My friends Deb 'n' David

And, it was especially nice because I was able to try it out on a good friend of mine whose husband is also one of my reiki clients and someone I have actually known since we were teenagers. It is such a good feeling to know that you have helped someone to feel better without them having to take pain medications which are, in my opinion anyway, never a good long-term solution.

A Little Bit of Me-Time

This week, with my mother-in-laws' knee surgery, my husband has been staying with my father-in-law all week. She will be in rehab for a few more days and, Goddess willing she will continue to heal well there, so he will probably not come home until Sunday.

Now, please don't get me wrong, I really do love my husband, but it is so nice to have the house all to myself for a short time. I can chill out in front of the TV and watch all the movies that I haven't gotten to see yet or I can choose not to watch anything at all. I can lie back on the sofa and curl up with a good book in peace and quiet while enjoying the company of my kitty cats.

The only one not very happy about this temporary arrangement is my husband's cat, Kiki who is a tad confused as to why daddy hasn't been home every night to snuggle up with.  ;)

Why Nature?

I have been asked on more than one occasion, "Why do you worship Nature and a Goddess and God? What is it that makes you believe so strongly about Paganism?"

While these are rather complex and in depth questions to say the least, my short answer to them is always, "Because everything comes down to Nature. We came from the Earth and, in the end, we return to the Earth."

After all, it is Nature which has the power to create life. It is Nature that can choose to heal us when we are sick and it is Nature which also gives us our life cycle of birth, life and rebirth. We, as Wiccans and Pagans, see the divinity in all living things. We know Nature to be, respectively, our Earth Mother and Father God - Nature's feminine and masculine aspect.

Just as Nature can "giveth," Nature can also, by that same law, "taketh away" with the Natural disasters in which we sometimes endure. In other words, our  Natural resources such as water, food, warm Sun, air and all of the essential things we depend on Her for in order to live.

For all of these reasons, I feel we must respect Nature - ergo our Earth Mother and Father God. For without Them, no living being could exist. For me, these are very basic facts of life. For me, there is no "why."

Reiki II Classes Postponed

Frances M. Moise, Certified Reiki Master/Teacher of Usui Shiki Rhyoho & Shamballa Multidimensional Healing

This was supposed to be the weekend for my classes in completing my Reiki II Certification, but due to scheduling conflicts for some of us, and just "life interventions" in general, we needed to re-schedule our classes for sometime in June.

As for me, it would definately be a much better time as: 1) we were told that our kitty Midnight must have two of his teeth pulled due to them being really bad and if we don't it will more than likely cause him more medical issues (not to mention yet more unreasonable vet bills!) and 2) my mother-in-law just had knee surgery on Monday and she needs me to be around to help her clean and such since she obviously will not be able to get around very well for a few weeks or so.

Anyway, they say everything happens for a reason, and I truly believe, for whatever reason, that they do.

_________________________________________

Cast circle and call corners in usual manner. Light incense & the rest of the altar candles. Invoke Goddess and God:

(Light the tall Silver Goddess candle in Her honor) -
"Blessed Lady Moon, Mother of all life, I invite your presence in my circle tonight. Join me in the joyous enchantment of this esbat night. I stand here beneath the light of your love to worship you in the ancient way. I seek to invoke Your creative power that my devotional right shall be successful. Hear me now! Allow me to feel your essence within me, my Mother, as I bless your bounty and your goodness! Hold me in your warm, silvery arms and wrap me in your protective embrace. So mote it be!"

(Light the tall Gold candle in His honor) -
"Blessed Lord of the Night, join me now in this sacred rite. Your Lady rides high in the starry sky and will soon be in and of me. Come now to join me in the ancient Holy Rites. So mote it be!"

At this point, it is traditional to honor the Mother Moon with song and/or dance - perhaps a musical instrument that is portable could be played. You could also make a magickal wish by jumping the caudron or meditating. After this, you could then perform the rite of Drawing Down the Moon. You can use your athame or wand or, if you prefer to, you could use a femine symbol such as your Chalice or cup of water (womb of the Mother). Begin by standing as near to the center of your circle as possible then turn to face the Moon. Allow Her light to pour over your face. If you are NOT outdoors, try to be near a window. If using an athame or wand, raise it and point it at the center of the Moon. If using a Chalice or cup, hold it in front of your face so that you can see the Moon's light reflected on the surface of the liquid inside.

(For a woman - hold your Athame/Wand/Chalice/Cup to your breast while saying):
"Blessed Mother, Goddess, your powerful silvery light washes over me permeating my being with Your eternal, vibrant life energy. Enter now this consecrated (Athame/Wand/Chalice/Cup) and prepare to merge with me, your loving (child/daughter). Come into me, O Mother! I now draw down the Moon into me, Her earthly vessel."

(For a man - hold your Athame/Wand/Chalice/Cup to your chest while saying):
"Blessed Father God, your silvery light washes over me permeating my being with Your eternal life energy, Your creative potenial. Enter now this consecrated (Athame/Wand/Chalice/Cup) and prepare to merge with me, Your loving (child/son). Come into me, my Father! I now draw down the Moon into me, His earthly vessel."

(When you feel the energy has completely absorbed, place your tool back down on your altar space. Work any magickal spells (healing, protection, etc) you feel you'd like to. These spells are especially powerful under the influence of the Full Moon. You can raise your "cone of power" by chanting, dancing, singing or drumming. When you have concluded your magick, it is then time to release the invoked energy by simply holding the tool against your chest or breast (the entry point) and visualize the God/Goddess energy flowing out of you and back into the tool. Raise the tool upward towards the Moon to allow all of the energy to return from whence it came).

When you are ready, thank the deities, close the ritual and open the circle:

(While extinguishing the Goddess candle) -
"Blessed Mother Goddess, I thank You for Your presence at my circle tonight and humbly bid You merry part until we merry meet again. Blessed be!"

(While extinguishing the God candle) -
"Blessed Father God, I thank You for Your presence at my circle tonight and humbly bid You merry part until merry we meet again. Blessed be!"

(Ritual adapted from Edain McCoy's book, "Lady of the Night.")

Special little gift from hubby

My husband loves to work on jigsaw puzzles. In fact, it has always been one of his favorite hobbies.  He knows how much I love anything to do with mermaids and he helps me in this endeavor  every chance he gets.

He decided to put together, glue and frame this beautiful mermaid child puzzle he had bought a while ago. I really love it - and him for being so sweet and thoughtful!

Shopping at the Flea Market

Yesterday afternoon, my husband and I decided to go bargain shopping at Zern's Auction House in Gilbertsville, PA. Zern's is one of our local flea markets and one of the oldest in PA. It has been around since 1922 and is only open on Friday's and Saturday's.

It is a fairly huge place and there are all sorts of cool stands, food and, of course, an auction. The weather was rainy and cold, but we didn't care - we had a good time anyhow.  Here are some of my finds.

 A star wall sconce

Little mermaid candle holder

Small hanging heart decorations with holly painted on them

Small tree votive candle holder

2 interior lights for our bedroom closets (found at the Overstock.com stand)

All in all, it was a pretty good day and when we got home I chilled out with my kitties for the remainder of the day - my kind of Saturday!

On a more positive note

As some of you may already know, I have been donating funds and resources whenever I can to one of our local animal shelters called, "Animals In Distress." This is a no-kill shelter which takes in ALL kinds of critters! They even rescued a paralyzed kitty whom they helped to learn to walk again and now has a really good home.

Success stories such as these bring tears of joy to my eyes! In the mist of all of the bad things that have been going on at work this week, it was so nice to come home yesterday and find a very thoughtful letter which I received in the mail from Rose Yanger at the shelter.

You see, about a month ago, I sent them a few homemade cat nip mouse toys along with my regular donation. I love to crochet and thought I would put my skill to some sort of good use. I am so glad that I was able to help brighten up the day of these much deserving animals! I pray that ALL of these precious animals find wonderful homes.

Lost Comments from previous post ...

I want to thank April and Robin for taking the time to share their comments on my previous post, "Prejudice Never Sleeps.". I have re-posted them as they were lost when Blogspot was down and I could not retreive them other than to scan the printed pages that I had saved in my blog book. Please click on the pic TWICE if you would like to read them - again, thank you and Blessed be!!!

Prejudice Never Sleeps

It never ceases to amaze me how the ignorance of others seems to breed like some sort of terrible disease with no known cure.  I wasn't going to post this, but I feel so strongly about the subject that I feel I must share it with all of you.

Today, I was threatened by a few of my co-workers because of the mere fact that I am a Wiccan. Mind you, I do not advertise my religious beliefs nor do I even wear a pentagram to work. The only thing I am guilty of is printing off copies of my blog posts (at home!) for two of my co-worker friends who have asked me to do so becuase they say that they enjoy reading them. I always place them in their desk drawers - never on top of their desks.

So, this morning one of these "so-called" co-worker friends approached me at the switchboard and informed me that a few of her fellow co-workers were not happy about my blog posts and told her to warn me that if I did not stop distributing them to these particular people, they would go directly to my supervisor about it.

Now, first of all, I do not and nor have I ever solicited these posts or my personal religious beliefs in the work place. Unlike a couple of other employees I work with who actually keep a Bible or the like at their desk every single day, I do not feel the need to advertise nor push my beliefs on anyone else. I have no problem with them wearing crosses or the Star of David, etc. (to each their own), but I do not appreciate, nor will I tolerate, someone threatening my job or my livelihood. The way I see it, what right do they have to do this? Who are THEY to mess with my life in this way?

Further, the only way anyone would know about these posts (or my business) is if they have actually gone into these employees drawers and snooped. As far as I am concerned, I did nothing wrong and furthermore, the only people who should have the right go into someone else's desk drawers are the Supervisors.

These same people are also spreading out right lies about me as well - claiming that I am "rude" to customers on the switchboard phones and distributing these posts on company time. Neither is true, in fact, I have been covering the company switchboard for 7 years now and do these same people honestly believe that if this accusation were true, I would still be responsible for this job? And I have never done any of this on "company time." I go into work early every day and if I have a post to distribute, I do it BEFORE the start of work! Not to mention, there would be no way I could even so much as get into my blog on the computer at work as they block all of these sites.

Of course, not only did these cowards not confront me personally about the fact that they apparently have a problem with me, but the "gopher" who approached me about this refused to give me the names of my accusers.

It appears that some people do not have anything better to do with their work day than to stick their noses into other peoples business and make threats about someones job due to the fact that they are ignorant when it comes to other peoples religions. Sometimes I have to wonder - will prejudice against others ever end?

____________________________________________

Lugh is a Celtic Sun God and the word, "Lughnasadh" simply means, "the chase of Lugh." Lammas is a more Christianized version of this sabbat and its' translation is "loaf mass."

"Tonight I honor our deities in Their aspects as the Grain God and the Corn Mother,
Blessed be this season of Lughnasadh and the bounty of the First Harvest,
Fruit of the womb of the Mother -
Blessed be Mother Earth,
Blessed be Father God!"

(Place one hand on your heart and say) -
"I am grateful for so many things which our gracious Lord and Lady have bestowed upon me. Our Father has generously given us His light and protection at Midsummer so that our loving Mother could bless us with Her essence once again."

(The Symbolic Great Rite) -
Pick up your athame and slowly dip it into the chalice of wine or juice while repeating:

"Chalice to athame
As Goddess is to God,
Father is to Mother
As man is to woman -
Behold the sacred union of The One!"

(Pick up the loaf of bread and say):

"I will count my many blessings on this sabbat of bounty."

(Break off a piece of the bread and then recite all the many things that you are thankful for. When finished, take a drink from the chalice. Then place the items back on the altar while saying) -

"Blessed be the fruitful Mother,
Blessed be the God of the Harvest!"

(Set a piece of bread on a plate aside to give back to the Earth after ritual, then say) -

"I give this bounty of the land back to our Mother Earth and Her consort and ask that it be shared with the Faeries of the Fields and the animals of the woodland -
Offerings given in love return three-fold,
Blessed be this gift."

"I am a child of deity,
 I am part of the creative life force which moves the Universe;
I am part of all that is.
Though we are apart, we are ever together -
For we are one in the spirit of the Goddess and God,
Merry meet, merry part and merry meet again -
Blessed be!"

(Close ritual, thank the deities and open the circle - remembering to give back to the Earth)

Bring me Thy warmth and light as I celebrate the Autumn Equinox. Send Thy spirit forth so that I, your child, may feel your light within me -
As it is willed, so mote it be."

_________________________________________

(Pick up the chalice of wine or juice and hold it upward toward the sky and say) -
"Blessed be this season of Mabon,
Time of the Second Harvest -
The harvest of fruit and wine,
 Blessed be the Lady!"

(Place the chalice back on the altar and now pick up your athame or wand and say) -
"Today all things are in balance,
Both night and day and Goddess and God are equal
as are life and death -
Blessed be the Lord!"

(Place athame back on the altar and say)-
"But tonight darkness conquers the light,
taking us into the dark of the year,
It is a time to reflect upon those who have passed
and those who are yet to come."

(In honor of those who you wish to remember, you may recite the following poem) -
Mabon Lament

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond's glint on snow

I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain
When you wake up in the morning's hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft star that shines at night
*I am the ocean's calming waters,
Which carries Earth Mother's sons and daughters

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die
*And do not stand at my grave and mourn,
I am not there, I have been reborn

*Original author unknown; however, I have added some of my own verses for the purpose of this ritual.

(Pick up an apple, symbol of the Goddess, from the basket and hold it close to your heart, reflecting on the events passed and people whom you wish to remember at this time. When you are ready, say) -
"Tonight I mourn the loss of life and light,
But just as the apple which I hold in my hand gives both life and death,
So do our beloved deities -
Those who have passed shall return as surely as shall the light."

(Place the apple back into the basket to give back to the Earth later. Pick up the chalice once again and say)-
"Just as we have sorrow,
 We also have joy -
For this is the time of the wine harvest!"

(Now, bless the chalice of wine by placing your athame inside it while saying) -
"I bless this wine of the harvest in the name of our Mother Earth and Father God."

(Take a drink from the chalice in toast of the Goddess and God. When finished, set aside a portion to give back to the Earth later)

"I am a child of deity,
 I am part of the creative life force which moves the Universe;
I am part of all that is -
Though we are apart, we are ever together
For we are one in the spirit of the Goddess and God,
Merry meet, merry part and merry meet again -
 Blessed be!"

(Close ritual thank the deities and open the circle - remembering to give back to the Earth)

Estroven: Peri-Men's Best Friend?

Heat flashes, cold night and morning sweats, mood swings - sound familiar ladies? Yup, you guessed it, perimenopause! Mine started a couple of years ago and it would get so bad it was to the point where my poor husband was practically wearing a coat in the house in the middle of summer because my body felt like such a sauna!

To be honest, I will be the first one to admit that I tend to be very skeptical when it comes to the "over-the-counter" medications and how effective they really are. But, I refuse to take hormone pills or therapy - way too many bad side effects (including breast cancer)!

I must say though that after I had used Estroven for only a couple of days, it surprisingly worked great and all I have to do is remember to take one pill twice a day!

It's made up of all natural ingredients, with no aritficial dyes, colors or preservatives, including: Vitamin E 30IU, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B-6 and B-12, Folate, Calcium, Selenium, Date Deed extract (Zizyphus spinosa) and Magnolia bark extract, Isoflavones (from Pueraria lobata root extract and GMO-free soybeans, Black Cohosh root standardized extract, and Boron.

According to the research I had done regarding Estroven, it "helps to naturally support hormonal balance with ingredients known to be good sources of phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring compounds found in many plants, including soybean, whole grain cereals, seeds, nuts and many herbs. Phytoestrogens have a structure similar to that of the estrogen product in your body and help support hormonal balance."

Although I know that there is no such thing as a "cure all" for everything and, of course, all women are slightly different in their body make up, it certainly beats taking hormone pills any day of the week! I would definately recommend trying this product to anyone suffering from the horrible symptoms of menopause.

Midsummer's Day

One year upon Midsummer’s day
I slept beneath an elder tree
And in my dream while I there dozed,
A faerie came to me
First tall then lithe, then short and stout
Then just like me was she
With pointed ears and gauzy wings
And then with none to see
A light of green surrounded her
I smelled her rosy scent
She spoke like silver bells a-ringing:
“Come see my land,” she said; I went!
Fiddlers played and pipers too
In rings of clover on the hills
I heard the drifting, lovely tune
And it overcame my will!
The faeries danced and ate and drank
As on their merriment they bent
I joined them in a circle dance
And danced till I was spent
When I awoke I was again
Beneath the stately tree
I looked around, but could not find
A one of all the sidhe
I’ve searched for all these many months
To find a Fae to take me back
But the magick of Midsummer,
It seems is what I lack
So I’ll be off to the Faerie lands
In June when the roses bloom
When I see clover rings on the hills afar
and I hear a drifting piping tune!
