DON'T fall for it!

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to search for another assisted living facility for my mom because her agreement with Mifflin Court was only for a month. She is STILL not ready and quite frankly, I have my doubts she ever will be at this point, but given she refuses to accept the possibility that she may never be able to go home and live alone like she had previously I am at a total loss anymore.

At any rate, on the referral from a friend, I contacted "A Place For Mom" to get more information, Now, for those of you, like me, who by the name alone assumed that this was either a nursing home or a senior assisted living facility, it is NOT! It is a so-called "free" referral service. First of all, NOTHING in life is ever "free"! I should have done my homework BEFORE contacting them, but thank God I did not go any further with these scam artists.

Long story short, I received a phone call from Kim, my contact at Mifflin Court, immediately after I had sent her an email inquiring when exactly my mom's last day there would be that she would need to be out. I explained to her that I was looking into a local facility called, "Rittenhouse" via A Place For Mom referral service. SHE wasted no time in calling me and explained that "A Place For Mom" has financial contracts with participating senior living facilities and that the TRUTH is that they tell you that their service is "free" BUT what they do not tell you is that the facility pays the first month for your loved be to be there. MEANING, that THAT money IS A Place For Mom's commission that YOU will actually pay for in the end because "... that facility is not going to lose that money." Kim further said, "I have been doing this for 34 years and they will make up that month's expense from you."

So, at the moment I am trying to work with Kim to extend my mom's stay at Mifflin Court. This entire thing has been nothing but a complete nightmare! I would not wish this sh*t on my worst enemy, - I swear it.

Among the bad reviews and such that I found (and there were MANY) I thought it noteworthy to share these:

  1. A Place For Mom is nothing more than heavy advertising bundled with boiler room commission sales reps pressured to close. APFM performs no due diligence or quality review of providers before, during or after placement. It is not "free!" Your first month payment to a provider is their fee. APFM is nothing more than a bulletin board directory used by service providers to generate leads. Nothing more. Rather, there is something more... Harassment by high pressure boiler room commission sales reps. APFM could be selling penny stocks, commodities, options, aluminum siding or extended warranties...same model. Generate leads! Sure business is business just realize You are the mark!.

This whole experience has made me so ANGRY that I just had to publish this post. I understand that "nothing is free" but I refuse to pay someone else thousands of dollars to do something I could have done myself in the first place. A Place For Mom is nothing more than a Ponzi scheme and a rip-off IMO. As the saying goes, "BUYER BEWARE!" ..

Weekend happenings

Greetings, friends. Yesterday, my sister Aurora Skye and I had a belated birthday lunch at Ganly's Pub. Her birthday was actually the previous week, but she and her hubby spent the weekend celebrating with her relatives in Erie, PA ...

We both had a small bowl of Lobster Bisque for an appetizer ... Delicious!

She had the Turkey club sandwich ...

As per usual, we decided to do a bit of shopping at some of our local stores. I picked up a few lovelies at "Soul Centered Wellness" ...
A Soap Lift

An opaque geod.

From "The Mint Leaf" ...

AND, a new place Aurora had taken us to called, "The Mystic Mind" - me thinks we found another GREAT shop!
Strawberry scented Wax Melts. (only $5.00!)

A Triple Goddess chalice/goblet (Maiden, Mother, & Crone) ... Beautiful!

Handmade Soy candles ...

And last, but not least, "Barnes & Noble" bookstore where I purchased this cool book!

After I got home, my hubby surprised me with this! Whenever he sees anything with a mermaid on it, he buys it for me LOL! ...

Another surprise - Aurora gave me this sweet gift she bought for me at Presque Isle State Park while on her vacation. MANY THANKS!

Chilling out with Sir Leo last night.

Weekend happenings

Greetings, friends, I hope all is well. It has been another busy weekend. Yesterday, I spent a majority of the day running around for my mom - doing her laundry, checking her mail and messages at her house, etc. My husband mowed our lawn and kept getting a little visitor hopping around in the grass. He did not want to run over a baby wild bunny so he told me to take it into the house until he was finished. I placed this cute little guy in one of our small cat carriers then released it back outside afterward where my husband said its' "mommy was looking for him"

Earlier that morning I was finally able to find the time to get my hair cut at "The Girls Hair Studio" ...
My hair was so long that I had six inches taken off of it.

Later on in the evening, we dropped by my sister Aurora Skye and her hubby's house to check in on their kitty, "Hammy" while they are on vacation ...

Today, I met my girlfriend Deb for a long overdue lunch date at "The Railroad House" ...

She surprised me with an adorable pair of sunflower earrings! ... 💗

This Tuesday, I will be taking a tour of another Senior Living Center called, "Rittenhouse" in order to be proactive in the event that my mom is still NOT able to get up and down on her own. She only has thirty days at Mifflin Court and then she must leave. It is far too expensive for her to stay there another month.

Have a wonderful rest of the weekend everyone!

Update (Part 2)

Yesterday, my husband and I moved my mom into Mifflin Court where she will reside for the next full month. Her room is very nice - a lot like an efficiency hotel room. It has a small kitchenette, private bathroom, a small living room area, and a bedroom with two twin beds and plenty of night stands and roomy closet. It is completely furnished and we had them include a phone and television as well. The building is very well kept and this place has everything!

The Dining Room for the residents.
Entertainment room. There is also has a large activity room as well (not pictured)
Hairdressing Salon.
24-Hour nurse on staff at all times. When a resident checks in, they are given a Med Alert-type button to wear along with their apartment room key. They also set up a motion/movement device in the living room part of the apartment to detect a fall immediately so that they may respond right away. They will also transport her to her up-coming doctor appointments free of charge.
Part of the Lobby: Beautiful canaries and birds who love to sing to you! Very relaxing - and very cleanly kept!

Among the items that I needed to pick up for my mom was a set of women's pajamas - she had none at home that fit her since she lost so much weight. So, I ran to our local Walmart to get her this ... I told her just wait until the caregivers who help her get her night clothing on get a load of this - lol!

It was a bit of a rough start, but she is already making friends and has told me that the people are very nice and helpful. The staff are wonderful - from the Admissions Director right down to the nurses and caregivers. So far, we are extremely pleased. She starts up her Outpatient Therapy as of tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Update (Part 1)

Well friends, it has been rough, really rough this past month and I was actually debating whether or not to publish this post so here goes nothing ...

My mom will be discharged from Mifflin Center for rehab and my husband and I will be moving her into an efficiency apartment in the building next door to Mifflin Center called, "Mifflin Court" for a month in order to try to buy her only 30 more days to finish the rehab as Outpatient Therapy. Her POS insurance company cut her off as of last Thursday and the therapy team at Mifflin Center got them to cover her until Sunday (today).

She is NOT ready and she will need to be at the end of her 30-day stay at Mifflin Court. Folks, I have never been so frustrated and worried at the same time. She can not live with us for obvious reasons and we would have to convince her to sell her home and land in the hopes that she will have money to live on for the rest of her life! If Medicare Part B (Medicaid) has to step in it will be only after she goes broke - and loses EVERYTHING! Yup, the government does not give two sh*ts that you work like a slave your entire life just to have everything taken away from you when you are no longer of any use to them.

I am praying harder than I ever have that we can get her back to her home. Mifflin Court is a Senior Living Community that offers Outpatient Therapy not included in the $5,310.00 per month fee to stay there. My mom is getting a respite, but only for one month. After that, she must be out because she can not afford to stay ...

In the meantime, I have been approved for FMLA at work for the next five months - 24 hours three times a month which needs to be taken three consecutive days in one occurrence for incapacitation and only two hours every three months for a doctor appointment. Of course it is unpaid time, but it should help save my job at the very least. Tomorrow, I have to use 8 hours FMLA and my husband also took a PTO day to help get my mom situated at Mifflin Court.
