God's Eyes

In Wicca, our Father God is represented by the Sun and our Goddess by the Moon and Earth Mother. We believe that one can not exist without the other. For example, without the God (the Sun), our Mother Goddess (Earth) would not be able to nurture the land to grow the food which sustains us all. The Summer Solstice, also known as Litha or Midsummer, is the time of the year when we celebrate the Sun God who is approaching fatherhood. For this reason, the God's Eye is often used as a decoration during this sabbat.  The Sun has also been a long time symbol of protection and so it is with the God’s Eye.

God’s Eyes originated with the native peoples of South America who used its’ power of protection by wearing it as an amulet around their necks. They look much like an eye watching over you, symbolizing the God always protecting you from any harm. They may also be used as a decoration by hanging them from a tree at Yule – The Winter Solstice. I actually learned how to make these years ago when I was a Girl Scout.

God’s Eyes are easy to make and come in many different colors such as different shades of yellow (like the Sun.)  Since Midsummer is also a time when we, as Wiccans, celebrate animal life and our beloved pets, different shades of brown and tan can also be used in God’s Eye’s. I like to hang mine on the door to my bedroom where my cats sleep at night to protect them.
